The stereo Fairchild 670 is probably the “Holy Grail” of compressors in studio gear esoterica. The 670 is a variable-mu limiter which is unique in that it uses tubes for gain reduction, and not just as amplifiers. The unit can be used as a limiter or compressor, depending upon personal taste and program material. It can go from a 2:1 ratio as a compressor to a peak limiter with a 30:1 ratio. With its 14 transformers, 20 vacuum tubes, and 6 rack-space encompassing girth, the Fairchild 670, weighing in at 65 lbs, is the heavyweight champion of compression!

Nowadays, emulated in many forms, these units are the original items. One of the distinctive features of the Pultec EQP-1A is that it is a passive EQ, using only resistors, capacitors, and inductors to accomplish equalization. Since no amplifiers or followers are used within the EQ circuit, the different sections of the EQ interact with each other more than they might if active components were to be used. A good example of this is the way the low shelving works: if you dial in a 3dB boost while also applying a 3dB cut, the two filters do not cancel. Rather, they interact in an interesting way.

Originally part of the console in the Ronnie Lane Mobile truck. These are the much sought after black Helios models as used in London’s Olympic Studio, Basing Street Studio and the Rolling Stones Mobile truck, They were used to record two Led Zeppelin albums, two Bad Company albums, The Who’s “Live at Leeds” and Quadraphenia. They sound fantastic on guitars, drums (especially toms & overheads) and vocals. The eq boost imparts a unique “woody” musical tone unlike any other eq. Classic examples of Helios sound can be heard on The Rolling Stones “Exile On Main St” album and The Who’s “Quadraphenia” album. (Note – due to their design, these channels output 6db less than most mic pre’s and require a boost either by pushing up a post channel fader or compressor output by 6db)

The Neve 33609 Stereo Limiter/Compressor is based on the circuit design first used in the classic Neve 2254 limiter/compressor, circa 1969. The 2-channel, 2U rackmountable processor is geared toward both music recording and broadcast applications. Independent sidechains and threshold, attack and recovery controls are provided for both the limiter and compressor sections on each channel. Compression ratios are switch-selectable from 1.5:1 to 6:1 in five steps, and gain reduction is shown on independent moving coil meters for each channel.

Introduced in 1970, the Little Dipper filter set supplied the demand for a filter that could remove very specific sonic artifacts and anomalies in audio and film production. It has some of the tightest band filters ever made, and is most famous for this incredibly tight 5% Q on its dual-band filters and can handle these tight cuts in a relatively transparent manner.

Born on the 10th of May 1970, the 1073 preamp is possibly the world’s most desirable and famous preamp. Originally designed for the Wessex A88 console, the module was used extensively during the 1970s on a range of Neve recording consoles such as the 8014. The 1073 is a hand built Class A circuitry module offering 3 bands of EQ with one fixed high frequency band and two switchable bands with cut and boost.

Before the advent of the Space and Chorus Echos, the range of effects available was very limited. Distortion, wah-wah and phasing existed, but chorus and ensemble effects were still in the future, as were the complex delay, modulation and spectral effects that we now take for granted. So when Roland released an affordable tape echo with three input channels, a three-spring reverb, 12 reverb/echo modes, and independent EQ of the affected sound, it’s no surprise that it was a success… and now, legendary!

Audio professionals passionate about their compressors revere the LA-2A. The original was immediately acknowledged for its natural compression characteristics. A unique electro-optical attenuator system allows instantaneous gain reduction with no increase in harmonic distortion – an accomplishment at the time, still appreciated today.
